GOD IS CALLING
by claribel santiago
This past week a friend shared with me the remarkable story of her initial encounter with God. She told me that though for most of her life she lived with very little thought of God, there was a definitive moment in time when she kept sensing this overwhelming pull in her spirit, she identified as being from God. She was so absolutely certain it was God that, to the confounding of others around her, she kept saying “God is calling me”.
When I hear her tell her story, though the event itself is wondrous, what strikes me is that God knows each one of us so well that He seeks to reach us by means uniquely fashioned to our individual personalities.
Many calls, one God
I think about how God spoke to Moses in the form of a burning bush, how He sent an angel to bring His message to Mary, and how an angel appeared to Daniel causing him such great fear that he needed to be held up so he wouldn’t faint. It makes me wonder how I would have responded to each of these calls. Though I am creative, I have a very strong logical sense. I am certain, that had I heard a voice calling out to me or seen a burning bush, I would have dismissed it as a mistake, my own imagination or attributed it to some natural phenomenon.
In my case, God didn’t use the miraculous, but allowed me to reach the end of my independent self, so that my melancholy personality would kick-in and inspire me, emotionally, to respond to His call. It was only after the realization that no matter how much stuff or people I poured into my life, nothing satisfied. It was this sense of void that eventually led me to research different beliefs and conclude Jesus really is the answer.
“I am the way, the truth, and the life…” John 14:6
What is God saying
For you it may not be an audible voice, a tug, an emotion, or vision. Maybe it’s a stranger, a book, a circumstance, or TV show. The fact that I was inspired to write this devotional, and you are reading it, may very well be a means God uses to reach out to you. So, today while considering your resolutions at the brink of a new year, why not pause long enough to ponder what God is saying to you?
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20
