An Islander without an island
by S Andujar
I am a culture buff. I enjoy reading about people's culture and way of life. 'Ive spent years gathering information about Native American cultures and traditions, all the while really oblivious to my own culture.
One day I questioned myself "if anyone were to ask me details of my own people, could I actually answer"? I was ashamed to answer that I had not taking much interest in my own background. The more I dove into other's way of life, the more aware and interested I became in learning about my roots.
After collaborating with another Native American artist to create Penobscot dolls, I found a craft that I never knew how to do.
I was very proud of dolls that I have perfected. It was then that I took notice of a possibility of a doll of my own culture. So with that same dedication to my previous dolls, I put into my Puerto Rican dolls the same efforts and completed extensive research on their clothing and dance themes.
Today, I proudly make traditionally dressed (circa 17-18th century) Puerto Rican dolls. All originally designed and sewn by me and are available for purchase through my website.
