STANDING FIRM IN THE MIDST OF A STORM
by claribel santiago

The recent disaster is a clear depiction of our fragile environment. Nature reminds us daily, how little control we have over our world. We can believe we are in control, but the fact is none of us truly knows what tomorrow will bring. We can wish, want, and hope, but we really don’t know.

The heartwrenching images we see on the news can cause us to question our own stability and security. Whether it is the sudden drop of the barometric pressure causing a natural storm to turn our world upside down, or the personal storms of illness, death, divorce, or a job loss, life, for the most part, is unpredictable. Because of the decaying condition of our world "disasters" are suffered by each of us at one time in our lives. The Bible affirms this through the following verses:

"Meanwhile, creation is confused, but not because it wants to be confused. God made it this way in the hope that creation would be set free from decay and would share in the glorious freedom of his children. We know that all creation is still groaning and is in pain, like a woman about to give birth." Romans 8:22-24

Confused is defined as “Lacking logical order or sense.” That is a pretty good definition of our world today. Yet, amid the confusion God promises to guide us and to give us hope for tomorrow.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

Where do we turn?

The Bible tells us that “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” Psalm 46:1. The Psalmist clearly noted that we would have trouble, but he also noted that God is our refuge when we face these troubles. In the midst of life’s storms we can be overcome with fear and despair, or we can choose to rely on the promises of a God who has proven to be faithful.

Don’t believe in God’s Faithfulness?

Of course, as with everything in life we have a choice to make. We have the option to believe or not believe. However, before making a choice, it would be wise to review the evidence for relying on God's faithfulnesss.

One of the greatest modern day proofs of God's faithfulness are the Jewish people. They have throughout history been persecuted, to the point to of almost complete annihilation. They had no homeland, and were scattered among the nations, yet God promised thousands of years earlier that He would bring them back. In the book of Isaiah 66:8, which was likely written between 740 and 680 BC, we read:

“Who has ever seen or heard of anything as strange as this? Has a nation ever been born in a single day? Has a country ever come forth in a mere moment? But by the time Jerusalem's birth pains begin, the baby will be born; the nation will come forth.”

Though the land of Israel had been removed from the map for centuries, on May 14, 1948 Israel became a nation declared so “in one day” just as foretold by the Prophet of God. Is God faithful? We have witnessed in our lifetime irrefutable evidence that He is. Thus, we can conclude confidently: God is faithful and will keep His promises.

In times of uncertainty we can choose to despair or decide to stand firm on God’s Word. Which will you choose? I pray that the Lord will reveal His truth to you today.

Jeremiah 29:13
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
